Coronavirus: China Response and Next Steps
According to the World Health Organization, the comprehensive and strict measures China has taken to contain the spread have yielded positive results. The numbers of new infections and fatalities are on the decline, and more and more patients are recovering. These efforts have been recognized by international community.
In the face of a previously unknown COVID-19, China has rolled out perhaps the most ambitious, agile disease containment effort in history to promote temperature monitoring, quarantining, masking, and hand washing. Moreover, as the outbreak evolved, and knowledge was gained, a science and risk-based approach was taken to tailor implementation. Based on the protective approaches, China has achieved further control of the virus spreading.
China is already, and rightfully, working to bolster its economy, and return to a more normal semblance of its society, even as it works to contain the remaining chains of COVID-19 transmission. Appropriately, a science-based, risk-informed and phased approach is being taken, with a clear recognition and readiness of the need to immediately react to any new COVID-19 cases or clusters as key elements of the containment strategy are lifted.
Next step China will maintain an appropriate level of emergency management protocols, and carefully monitor the phased lifting of the current restrictions on movement and public gathering. Furthermore, establish a centralized research program to fast-track the most promising rapid diagnostics and serologic assays, the testing of potential antivirals and vaccine candidate is undergoing. As China with the advanced knowledge on COVID-19, its scientists are working closely with those abroad to further enhance the systematic and real-time sharing of epidemiologic data, clinical results and experience to inform the global response.
